Fill Your Garden with Fragrant Colour with Phlox Roots

Phlox is a cottage garden essential, beloved for its clouds of sweetly scented flowers and its ability to transform borders into a sea of colour. Planting bare roots is one of the most rewarding ways to grow these hardy perennials — they establish quickly, spread naturally, and return reliably year after year with minimal effort.

Why You'll Love Them

  • Heavenly fragrance — Rich, sweet scent that fills the garden on warm summer evenings
  • Abundant blooms — Dense clusters of flowers in shades of white, pink, lilac, red, and bi-colours
  • True perennials — Come back stronger each year, spreading to form impressive clumps over time
  • Pollinator magnet — Butterflies and bees are irresistibly drawn to Phlox in full bloom
  • Excellent cut flowers — Long-lasting stems with a beautiful fragrance, perfect for indoor arrangements

Growing Guide

Plant roots in autumn or early spring in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-draining soil. Choose a position in full sun to partial shade — good air circulation around the plants helps prevent powdery mildew. Space plants 45–60 cm apart to allow for healthy growth. Water regularly during dry spells and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as new growth emerges. Divide clumps every three to four years to maintain vigour and encourage the best flowering.

Perfect For

Traditional cottage garden borders, wildlife-friendly planting schemes, and mixed perennial beds. Phlox looks stunning planted in drifts alongside Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and ornamental grasses for a naturalistic late-summer display.
