Cover Walls, Fences & Pergolas with Clematis Bare Roots

Clematis is the undisputed queen of climbing plants, and bare root specimens offer an exceptional way to establish these vigorous growers quickly and economically. With an extraordinary range of flower forms — from delicate star-shaped blooms to large, saucer-like flowers — Clematis brings vertical colour and structure to any garden from spring through to autumn.

Why You'll Love Them

  • Spectacular climbing displays — Covers walls, fences, trellises, arches, and pergolas with a cascade of blooms
  • Exceptional variety — Available in a wide palette of colours including purple, pink, white, red, and bi-colours
  • Long flowering season — Many varieties bloom from late spring through summer and into autumn
  • Fast establishment — Bare roots settle in quickly, often outpacing potted plants in their first season
  • Great value — Bare root plants offer excellent quality at a fraction of the cost of container-grown specimens

Growing Guide

Plant bare roots as soon as possible after receipt, ideally in autumn or early spring. Dig a generous planting hole and enrich with well-rotted compost. Set the crown 5–8 cm below soil level to encourage strong basal growth and protect against clematis wilt. Position in a spot where the roots stay cool and shaded while the top growth reaches for the sun. Water well after planting and provide a support structure immediately. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Pruning

Pruning requirements vary by group — check your variety's pruning group (1, 2, or 3) for the correct timing and method to ensure the best flowering performance each year.

Perfect For

Gardeners wanting to add height, colour, and structure to their outdoor spaces. Ideal for training over existing shrubs and trees, softening boundary walls and fences, or creating a romantic, flower-filled archway.
